Under 17s - Match Report 12/12/2009
Manager: Shane Wyatt
Opponents: Dynamos
Result: Won 1 - 0

I realised before this match that I had only ever won one cup tie since the club began. Concentrating on the league would have been the obvious "excuse" had we lost this one but for a change, this comment will remain unused.

We began the game well, passing and moving the ball really well and making the extra man count, as our opponents has a late withdrawal. As the game wore on, you would have had to believe it was 11 v 11. The match was played virtually in the middle of the park mainly with very few chances created. When called upon though, Man of the Match Myles made 3 or 4 excellent saves which it could be said, won the match. A brave save at feet, a couple of superb tips over the bar...a 'keeper's mistakes can stand out but so can a great performance like this.

If only we could have scored at the other end. Truthfully, there was too much emphasis on trying to go through the middle of the opponents defence. David and Fozzie could have been used much more to try and get a cross in, either an early one from the edge of the box or going to the line and pulling a cross back. At half time this was something which was discussed. Charlie and AJ were working hard but finding it difficult to find a way through.

When we did begin to get around the full backs we caused mayhem in the 6 yard box and this was where we finally broke down Dynamo's resistance. After a scramble, AJ scored from close range, which we should have added to. However, the midfield battle ensued and then we allowed our opponents far to many chances and gave away numerous corners.

The game became scrappy as it went on, with neither side able to take hold on a heavy pitch. There was a little bit of moaning going on too, which is totally unnecessary, from both sets of players. We are more than capable of winning by playiing football as I have said on many occasions.

A good result with one other plus that kind of went un-noticed.....we kept a clean sheet for the first time this season. Excellent news which we must replicate in 2010. Special thanks go to Kurt, injured at training but ran the line so well today. Thanks to all parents for your assistance this year, special mention to Mrs Smallbone and her young assistant for the coffee delivery today.

Happy Christmas to all and Happy New Year. We end top of the league, even with other results next week, and in the quarter finals of the cup. I don't think that is too bad?

Romans march on!
