Under 17s - Match Report 19/09/2009
Manager: Shane Wyatt
Opponents: Bracknell Cavaliers
Result: Won 4 - 1

Another close match was expected from both managers as our games usually are. With only 11 players available it was a little too close for comfort, but we eventually came through a tough test.

After the early chance, a superb header from Joe which rattled the bar, we never really threatened the Cavs defence. All through balls were too long or defenders cleared without any problem. Having some players away is always difficult so we had to play to what strength we had and did adapt well, though we sacrificed a lot of balls in the middle of the park. Lack of height seemed to allow Cavs to win every header from goal kicks and our usual passing game was never really seen.

As Joe and AJ up front continuously pressured Cavs defenders, a mistake would surely come. It did, though fortuitously, from a bouncing ball to hand we were awarded a penalty. AJ slotted it away, the 'keeper had no chance. Shortly afterwards, Myles went after a loose ball when he really need not have, and upended Cavs forward. A penalty was given, again scored, though Myles was close to it, to keep the sides level at half time.

For 40 minutes of the second half, the teams were almost equal in all areas, with our opponents reduced to long range shooting. As the game wore on, legs were tiring and Cavs had to cope with keeping an injured lad on, having used their substitutes. AJ had a number of chances and it was only a matter of time that he would find the net again. Seemingly lost on the far touchline he took possession and beat 2 Cavs defenders before finishing from a difficult angle to ensure another victory. He then attacked down the line, running and grounding the coach, for which he may have to work harder at training this week!! A goal worth waiting 85 minutes for though and worthy of winning any match.

Alex S, Ross, David, Alex B, Charlie, George, Oli and Taylor all worked hard and will probably rest until next Saturday now. Man of the Match went to Taylor, who although playing out of position, did excellent work and seemed to get stronger as the match went on.

Excellent result against a team that will always be hard to beat. We will need to be back on our game for the return.
