During the week, we were unsure if we would get a game on at all. Fortunately, a
change of venue ensured we did, and what a match. We had a preview of Spartans in a
close fought pre-season friendly so we knew more or less what to expect.
The rain began as the game did. My gameplan was no different to normal. Use the
flanks, get the ball wide and out of the mud and stretch the opposition. We
continued where we left off last week and had Ascot under a lot of pressure. Oli
worked really hard just behind Fozzie and Elliot, continually harassing Ascot's back
four. Charlie played some intelligent football, using Alex and Ben wide and as the
game wore on it was clear that we just needed a shot on goal to bounce in the mud.
Half time came and went, no breakthrough from either side.
Ascot had a good spell after the break and nicked what would be the only goal of the
game. Otherwise we were solid at the back, Myles was in command of his area and Ross
had another excellent match as stand in captain. Hardly anything got past Man of the
Match Kurt who had the Ascot forward runs shut out all through the game. We then
gained a penalty by way of a handball. In the absence of our regular taker, Alex
stepped up but the 'keeper saved comfortably. Luck was not on our side. The squad is
now growing as a unit and should fear no team. However, lack of goals is still the
only area of concern and maybe I will just have to move lads about to find an end
product. A fine performance overall though, one for all to be proud of.
