For the first time ever we took two U14 teams to a tournament. Though it wasn't to
be, I did have the thought that they may play each other during the knockout
stages later on.
We had the Black team featuring Elliot, Sam C, Tom, Samir, Taylor Oli and Chris,
making his debut, in Group T. The Blue team, with Charlie, Ross, Alex, Sam F,
Daniel, Jono, Greg and Oisin making up a full 8, in group U.
Black team began well, Chris scoring the only goal against Bracknell Cavaliers.
They followed this with a goal-less draw against Dynamos. After Oli had levelled
against Yateley, a 3-1 defeat was not deserved for all the hard work. They then
came up against Ashridge and slipped into the plate competition with a
disappointing 3-0 loss.
The Blue team began with a very evenly matched 0-0 against York Town but came up
against a quality Woodley Hammers team next and going down 3-0. Against
Wrightchoice, we had enough chances to win, Sam F scoring the only group goal, in
a 1-1 draw but we should have been out of sight by half-time in this game. A 2-0
loss against FC Bracknell followed but we should have done better, as we were soon
to see.
Twyford Comets were the Black team's opponents in the plate quarter-final. We
played well but needed to defend harder and didn't take the chances that fell to
us and went out of the competition 2-0.
For the Blue team, a play-off was needed before quarter-finals could begin and
were drawn against Darby Green. As mentioned earlier, we did better! Suddenly,
this team played as one, like they had done it for years. Greg scored 2, one an
absolute corker from long range off the outside of his right boot, a real joy to
see. Jono made it safe with another accurate shot from distance, to secure a 3-0
victory. Some of the best football this squad has ever played...long may that
continue. For the quarter-final we were drawn against Bracknell Cavaliers and
should have taken our chances. They, unfortunately took their two chances, we did
not. So again we bowed out at the same stage, but there are many positives to take
from these performances, especially as the teamwork is improving.
