A soaking was what the skies provided but the team on the pitched were not swamped
at all. We started slowly against Burghfield B, losing out only 1-0. Charlie in
goal kept the scoreline respectable. Maybe we hadn't got up yet lads? Lower Earley
Predators up next and this was a game of few chances. Our next opponents had won
their first 3 games without conceding. AFC Charvil therefore, seemed to be a hard
game "on paper". However, their 'keeper drop kicked the ball from his hands, an
illegal kick at this age in this competition. So Oisin took the resulting free
kick, about 6 yards out and it squeezed in through a maze of boots. We held out
and never really looked threatened for a 1-0 win.
Next up, Laurel Park and someone said "oh no, they're good". After going a goal
down, a brace from Oisin gave us a well deserved 2-1 victory. Sandhurst were our
final opponents and we played out an even goal less draw. So with 5 point per win,
2 for a draw plus a point for each goal we ended up with 17 points and 3rd place
in the group.
As the best 3rd placed out of the two U14 groups, we were pitched against the 6th
placed team in our group......Sandhurst again! This was a scrappy affair which we
didn't turn up for which was maybe down to too many burgers during the break
between the group and this knock-out stage. A 1-0 defeat was the result, though
both teams were about level as they were in the group match.
