Under 10s Black - Tournament Report 24/03/2007
Manager: James Bentley

The first major event of the new Millenium happened last Saturday … this was the moon landing, the assignation of JFK, and Di and Charles’ wedding all rolled in to one.

Hurst Romans Under 10 Black team won the end of season Cup tournament.

I’ll repeat that. HURST ROMANS UNDER 10 BLACK TEAM WON THE END OF SEASON CUP TOURNAMENT.

The team of Henry, Kristian, Josh, George, Jack, Cameron, Shiva … with back-up from the Mitchell brothers – that’s Mitchell and Ellis – sprang the greatest sporting upset since Ali beat Foreman in 1974.

After finishing in the bottom half of the league table … though not bottom for a change … they shook up the world, by making it through the group stage, then winning both the semi and final, all on one sunny afternoon in Arborfield.

“Impossible” I hear you cynics scream. “Must be some dodgy cricket-like match fixing scandal going on”.

I admit there may have been some irregular betting patterns leading up to the day’s play -but obviously success had always been planned.

Early doors the management team had decided to concentrate on the cup competition and peak for this end of season tournament. We planted the bulbs in winter knowing they’d bloom in spring.

And after passing the first hurdle, which is turning up with seven men, thanks to the reappearance of man of mystery Shiva - and big boss Martin Rayner hiring out his more than useful footballing sons – the team hit the first match in confident mood after some great end-of-season performances.

Normally we’ve a defence like origami … one that folds under pressure … but on Saturday we were unflappable.

Two goalless draws, followed by a one-nil win thanks to a Mitchell thunderbolt saw us heading into our last group game with a chance of making it through to the final four. Yet another 0-0 match saw us looking at a penalty shoot-out to book our place in the semi’s.

Luckily this isn’t a team of Stuart Pearce, David Batty, Gareth Southgate and Chris Waddle. Like all English teams down the years they may – on a good day – be better than us at kicking a ball straight, tackling, heading, running, diving and cheating … but they can never win a penalty shoot-out.

Steve McLaren just take notes and watch the video of our boys. Not only did they hold their nerve to make it through to the last four … but wait for it …. They won the semi-final on a penalty shoot-out … and wait for it … the final as well.

Scenes of joy not seen since 1966’s World Cup triumph were witnessed on the footballing streets of Hurst.

I was on the phone with the Prime Minister talking about open-air bus rides through the capital to follow on from the precedent set by the England Rugby World Cup team, the Olympians and the Ashes stars.

He declined the offer but mentioned we could get a Loddon Taxi to take us up Lodge Road, on to Wokingham Road and down Hinton Road, before ending up for tea at The Green Man.

Ok, I know it’s not Buckingham Palace, but they do a better Cajun Chicken and chips … and their spotted dick and custard is better than anything HRH could knock up.

This was a victory for the fans as much as the team. Come rain, ice, snow, more rain, and even more rain, they are stood on that touch line. Encouraging, supporting, smiling and laughing … in fact I think we’re the only supporters who have ever been told off by a referee for laughing.

What makes it even odder was that the manager wasn’t even there. He was sat in a hotel room in Barbados watching events unfold on the Betfair.com website.

Unfortunately there’d been mix up at the hotel and his usual room had been given to the Pakistan cricket coach … and so the Hurst boss never did get to collect the trophy that those masked men said they were delivering to him.

Hopefully this will be the first of many trophies for our Hurst heroes … but if not then this will go down in the history books. It will be remembered like the moon landing, the discovery of Australia and of course when Huddersfield Town won the Third Division Play-Off title four years ago.

So Henry, Shiva, George, Kristian, Josh, Cameron, Jack, Ellis and Mitchell take a bow.

Champions all!
